These courses help girls of varied scout levels make progress toward their patches.  Each program is scheduled for 90 minutes and takes about 60 to 90 minutes to complete, depending on the number of participants.   Programs include up to 30 minutes of recreational swim time following completion of the course material by all participants.  Pool size and depth requirements listed after each course description.

$250 per course
Minimum 6 participants; maximum 10 participants
One instructor, one lifeguard, and all necessary program and lifesaving equipment provided

$25 per each additional participant
Maximum 20 participants per course

NOTE:  Backyard Lifeguards aims for a teaching ratio of 1 instructor to every 6-10 participants.  Additional instructors provided as needed based on the size of the group and age of participants.  Course fees include a non-teaching lifeguard stationed on the pool deck, as required by the Girl Scouts USA organization.

Basic 10 Water Skills Level 1
Requirements I, II & VII
Brownies will learn and discuss the buddy system and other safe choices when swimming, including proper use of a life vest and the H.E.L.P. and huddle positions.  Girls will demonstrate five basic breath control and locomotive skills in water before playing a water game using a kick
board.

Basic 10 Water Skills Level 2
Requirements I, II & VII
Scouts will rescue a tired swimmer using reaching and throwing objects without entering the water themselves.  They will demonstrate skills for completion of American Red Cross Level 2 swimming skills and show the proper method for entering, exiting, and maneuvering an inner tube in shallow water.

Basic 10 Water Skills Level 2
Requirements I, II & VII
Scouts will rescue a tired swimmer using reaching and throwing objects without entering the water themselves.  They will demonstrate skills for completion of American Red Cross Level 2 swimming skills and show the proper method for entering, exiting, and maneuvering an inner tube in shallow water.

Basic 10 Water Skills Level 3
Requirements II, VII & X
Scouts will learn to use the Buddy System and demonstrate more advanced breath control and locomotive skills in water.  They will learn to safely maneuver a boogie board.  Girls will learn the parts of a canoe and paddle, demonstrate safe embarking and disembarking, and basic maneuvering skills.

Basic 10 Water Skills Level 4
Requirements II & VII
Scouts will demonstrate competency in all American Red Cross Level 3 swimming skills, including swimming 50 yards of front crawl, elementary backstroke, sidestroke, and breaststroke, as well as underwater swimming, diving, and self rescue while wearing clothing in the water.  Instructor will lead girls through a basic water aerobics class.
