Lifeguard Instructor
BYLG offers group training for individuals aiming to become American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructors. Host facilities may contact Backyard Lifeguards to set up a full 24-hour course.
All candidates must be currently certified lifeguards with at least two years of experience and must successfully complete a lifeguarding skills competency evaluation during the first class session.
Upon successful course completion, candidates will be certified in Lifeguarding and Lifeguard Instructor for two years. Both certificates will have the same expiration date.
In-Person LGI Review Courses
Any current Lifeguarding Instructor wishing to maintain LGI certification must complete BOTH an online update and an in-person LGI Review course every two years. More detailed requirements for LGIs can be found on the American Red Cross Learning Center.
All candidates that successfully demonstrate American Red Cross Lifeguarding skills to the objective will be issued a Lifeguarding certificate valid for two years. All candidates that successfully demonstrate American Red Cross Lifeguarding skills to the standard will be issued both a Lifeguarding certificate and a Lifeguarding Instructor certificate valid for two years.

Completed Written Tests – Lifeguard and CPR test, self-graded

Adult & Infant CPR mask and practice valve – Any candidate will be unable to complete the review course without his/her own pocket mask and valve.

One-piece swimsuit, towel, and goggles

Snacks and water bottles – Some facilities may not have vending machines

Minimum class size 4 participants; maximum 8 per Instructor Trainer *

*Backyard Lifeguards reserves the right to cancel courses with fewer than 4 participants.

Candidates must register with host facility at least one week prior to course date in order to secure registration.

Registered participants will receive a confirmation email and waiver to be completed prior to the first class session.
Cancellation Policy:
Once registered, failure to complete any portion of the course, or failure to successfully demonstrate the knowledge and skills required of the training level and course for which the participant is enrolled, may result in dismissal from the course, or in no certificate issued, without full or partial refund. Opportunities to transfer registration to a future course may be available pending availability and at the discretion of Backyard Lifeguards.
